November’s App of the Month: Among Us
Played by over 100 million people worldwide, it may not come as a surprise that this month’s App of the Month is lockdown favourite, Among Us.
Created in 2018 and remaining under the radar until the mid-pandemic summer of 2020, Among Us is a multiplayer game where between four and 10 players are dropped onto an alien spaceship. Each player is designated a private role as a ‘crewmate’ or an ‘impostor.’ The goal of the Crewmates is to identify the Impostors, eliminate them, and complete tasks around the map; the Impostors’ goal is to covertly sabotage and kill the Crewmates before they complete all of their tasks. It’s the ‘online version of wink murder.’
Among Us is playable on smartphones and computers, available to download from the Apple Store and the Play Store. The plot is simple, the game is easy to play. Its seemingly outdated, jelly-bean graphics are also just a part of its charm. Its popularity can be attributed to its ease of accessibility, streaming platforms like Twitch, and its unique social spin on gameplay.
Considering the recent months and the Coronavirus pandemic, a lot of people have taken to video games to spend time. Among Us has been just perfect for that. Among Us has reminded us that complicated storylines and high skill thresholds are not required for a video game to be successful. Its huge success over the last few months has proven just that.
Among Us is definitely a favourite here at Cuhu. The game occupies our Friday evenings as part of our weekly virtual game nights. It’s a five-star rating from the whole team.
